MarketCheck, the UK’s leading source of used vehicle market data, has today revealed that Volkswagen has narrowly overtaken Ford to become the most represented manufacturer among used petrol cars currently advertised for sale in Britain.
MarketCheck data shows there are 28,425 used petrol Volkswagens currently on the market, giving the manufacturer a 9.61% share of Britain’s active petrol stock.
Ford is just behind, with 28,156 vehicles and a 9.52% share.
Vauxhall takes third place with 25,719 active listings, representing 8.69% of available petrol stock, followed by Audi with 23,025 (7.78%) and BMW with 19,290 (6.52%).
The figures also highlight a marked contrast with Britain’s emerging used electric vehicle market.
MarketCheck’s EV data places BMW and Tesla at the top of active electric stock, whereas the petrol market continues to be dominated by Volkswagen, Ford and Vauxhall.

“Volkswagen and Ford are effectively neck-and-neck at the top of Britain’s used petrol market, with fewer than 300 vehicles separating them.
What’s striking is how much the ranking reflects the brands that have been at the heart of the British car market for decades. Volkswagen, Ford and Vauxhall alone account for almost 28% of the used petrol cars currently available.
It’s also interesting to compare this with the used EV market. The brands leading electric stock are very different, with BMW and Tesla currently occupying the top two positions. It gives us a glimpse of how the make-up of Britain’s used car market could change as more electric vehicles enter the market.”
