Growth in UK Car Manufacturing (2011)
In 2011, the UK car manufacturing sector experienced significant growth, with a reported 5.8% increase in car production compared to the previous year. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) attributed this expansion largely to export demand, as four out of every five cars manufactured were designated for international markets[^1].
Monthly and Annual Production Data
By the end of 2011, total car production reached 1,343,810 units, marking a substantial recovery from previous years. December alone saw a modest production increase of 1.6%. However, domestic car sales showed a decline, with a 4.4% drop in new car purchases within the UK[^2].
Engine production also contributed to the industry’s growth, with 2.5 million units produced over the year—a 4.9% rise from the previous year. December production for engines dipped slightly by 1.3%, reflecting broader industry fluctuations[^3].
Factory Performance and Key Manufacturers
Among key contributors to UK car manufacturing, Nissan’s Sunderland plant emerged as the most productive facility in 2011, with an output of 480,000 vehicles. Other significant players included Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port and Land Rover’s plants in Solihull and Halewood, which all saw increases in production[^4]. Conversely, some factories, such as Honda’s Swindon plant, Jaguar’s Castle Bromwich factory, and Mini’s Oxford site, reported declines in production over the year.
Industry Resilience and Government Collaboration
Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, highlighted the resilience of the British automotive industry, attributing its endurance to effective cooperation between industry stakeholders and government support. Everitt stressed the importance of this partnership for continued growth and competitiveness[^5].
